Updated with closing prices.

After the extended Labor Day weekend, investors came back with
conviction Tuesday, sending the S&P 500 up 2.5%.

The increase in the U.S. benchmark followed a 2.9% increase for the
Shanghai Composite Index SHCOMP, +2.92% on investors’ expectations
that China’s government will take more steps to stimulate the
country’s economy.

Also Tuesday, Chinese regulators announced a plan for a ‘circuit
breaker’ to help limit panic selling.

A major concern of U.S. investors is whether the Federal Open Market
Committee will decide during its meeting next Tuesday and Wednesday to
raise short-term interest rates. The federal funds rate has been locked
in a range of zero to 0.25% since late 2008. An increase of a quarter
point really wouldn’t mean much, although it could cause some
panic-selling of stocks.

But a sustained increase in the federal funds rate bodes well for most
banks, which would benefit from higher rates. The S&P 500 financial
sector trades for 12.6 times aggregate 2015 estimated earnings,
according to analysts polled by FactSet, while the S&P 500 SPX,
+2.51% trades for 16.2 times.

Investors are anticipating a major rollout of new products by
Apple Inc. AAPL, +2.78% at the company’s hardware event Wednesday.
The iPhone maker’s shares rose 2.8% Tuesday.

The S&P 500 is down s.3%o far this year. The S&P 500 has slumped 7.6%
from its closing high May 21.

Here are the 10 S&P 500 stocks with the largest gains in the first
